To Day is the Birthday of Susan Tedeschi

Today is the birthday of Susan Tedeschi, born on Nov 9, 1970 in Boston, MA.  She is a wonderful blues and soul music singer.  She has received multiple Grammy Award nominations and is the winner, with her other 10 bandmates in the Tedeschi Trucks Band, of the Best Blues Album Grammy for "Revelator".

Susan is one of my favorite singers, she reminds me of blues singers like Bonnie Raitt, who celebrated her birthday yesterday, Etta James and Janis Jopplin.  Here singing style is very gritty, low down and blusey when she needs to be, just the way I like it too.

It Hurts Me Too - Elmore James version

From a much earlier Tampa Red song - see Wikipedia - this is one of the most interpreted Blues songs - with the Elmore James version being most familiar. These are just 3 of these - but lots more out there.

You say you hurting, you almost lost your mind
The man you love, he hurts you all the time
When things go wrong, go wrong with you
It hurts me too

Tired of My Tears

Girl, you better go back in your mind
Try and find yourself a brand new life
I love you but you're toying with me
So if you can't change, go on, let me be

CHORUS
Well, I'm sick of your lies (sick of your lies)
Tired of my tears (tired of my tears)
Girl, if you want me, better tell it like it is

Oh, when a boy meets a Girl he likes
He starts to dream
Before he know it, he's caught buyin' his scheme
Now, I used to believe every word you say
But realize now, that was yesterday

CHORUS
Solo
CHORUS

When I'm with you, I lose control
That's why I'm offering you my heart and soul
You better take it now 'cause when it's gone
I won't even answer my telephone

CHORUS (x2)

Susan has the most familiar version but the original Ray Charles version is on this album
Sweet & Sour Tears

Susan Tedeschi's NPR Interview

I was pleasantly surprised to hear an interview of Susan Tedeschi on the NPR program All Things Considered. She went into how she wrote some of the new songs on her latest CD, her family life and what it is like to be a touring blues musician with two small children.

You can read and listen to the interview here >>Susan Tedeschi's Motherly Blues

Susan Tedeschi~Hurt So Bad

@ the Rhythm & Roots Festival. Charlestown, Rhode Island 9/1/07

I was just commenting over at The Blues Bloggers about Grammy Award-nominated singer and guitarist Susan Tedeschi. I really like her music so much. Her voice is amazing to me, when you see her and you hear her the two things don't seem to match. I keep saying, "how does all that power come out of such a small woman."

I loved her 2005 release Just Won't Burn, it is one of the blues albums in my collection where I can listen to ever song and say that I love it. Not many recording artist pull that off.

Her new release Back To The River, is her fifth studio album. It is her first in three years. This is supposed to be a very personal album. She worked with a number of roots music legends, including Tony Joe White and Gary Louris of the Jayhawks. She co-wrote all but one of the album's eleven songs with songwriter Sonya Kitchell.

Other musicians on this album includes her husband, Derek Trucks, and Texas bluesman Doyle Bramhall II. (Release date: 10/28/08)
