I Love the Lord Whitney Houston Gospel

I thought I'd share a little Whitney Houston singing Gospel on this Sunday Morning. Hope you all are having a good one.

Whitney Houston

Willie Headen — Find Another Woman

Yet another new singer for me but enjoyable

Sunday Blues

I would imagine all but the most seasoned collector has ever heard of blues singer Willie Headen. I for one certainly had not but I have blind faith in the good folks at Ace Records plus a collector’s curiosity, so I picked up the Willie Headen collection Blame It On The Blues with no idea what to expect. Ace, as most folks know, issues terrific post-war blues reissues circa the 40′s through the 60′s, very collector oriented, loaded with previously unreleased tracks and in depth notes. Blame It On The Blues spotlights an exceptional blues singer who recorded a handful of excellent 45′s in his five year on-off-on stint with Dootsie Williams’ Dootone, Dooto labels and the offshoot Authentic imprint.

Ding Dong Daddy

Let's hear from Wynona Carr. She was a gospel performer who moved over into secular R&B. Ding Dong Daddy is my favourite of her tunes.

Dr. John & The Lower 911 — Feel Good Music

There is a lot to take in here – Tribal contains 16 deeply detailed, fidgety tracks – but it’s never hard work. It’s a warm, gently funny album – Them suggests Van Morrison with a sense of humour, and Only in America has a whiff of the waspish wit of Randy Newman.

As a whole, it’s an altogether welcome updating of an unusually gilded resume.

NPR reviewed Tom Jones' New Album Praise and Blame. Tom Jones: 'The Lady Gaga Of Elvis Impersonators' by Ken Tucker. It caught me by surprised, I really like what I've heard of it so far, and I just love the below videos.

Mavis Staples - Spirituals and Gospel

If ever there were a time for Mavis Staples to return to recording, 2004 is it. Her tenure with her family's group the Staple Singers led by her late father Pops offered a steadying, positive presence on the pop scene during the late antiwar unrest and civil rights struggles of the 1960s through the 1970s. They offered up notions of personal responsibility, dignity, and spiritual hope in a heady and uncertain time. Have A Little Faith is a stellar collection of bluesy folk gospel and classic soul grooves recorded for modern times... The album is subtle, laden with beautiful dark grooves, moody guitars, organic percussion, and B-3 and Rhodes piano... Have a Little Faith is a glorious return for Staples and is capable of inspiring those who are lucky enough to encounter it.

Nguyen Le - Fragile Beauty

Born in Paris from Vietnamese parents, he began to play drums at the age of 15, then took up guitar & electric bass.

Fragile Beauty personifies "world music" that combines Vietnamese folk-songs/poetry with African, Japanese, and western influences. Thanh's voice is as lovely, evocative and mysterious as her homeland. Each song seems to tell a story, as her singing, coupled with Le's thoughtful compositions (articulated by skilled performers), provides aural landscapes that have the dichotomy of being timeless and contemporary. The delicate balance of voice, atmosphere and instrument comes to life on "Drifting On The Water," as Thanh's singing is exquisitely accompanied by guitar and piano. Its message can still be appreciated even if you don't comprehend the language.

Koop - sample based jazz

Koop is an electronic jazz duo from Sweden, consisting of Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson. Though the music may sound as if it is played by a tight jazz group, it is actually sample-based. Thousands of small clips of drums, strings, horns, and choirs are taken from old records and puzzled together into new songs.

So a matter of taste - but interesting - I think

Leonard Feather Explains the Blues

Hazmat Modine

Hazmat Modine is a blues and roots musical group from New York. 'Hazmat' is a portmanteau of 'hazardous material' and 'Modine' is the name of a company that manufactures commercial heaters but may be used to refer to the heater itself. According to lead singer, Wade Schuman this is appropriate since the band 'blows a lot of hot air' including harmonicas, tubas and saxophones

Jimmy Johnson Blues Band 1981- As the years go passing by

Dr. John & The Lower 911 — Tribal

Mac Rebennack, more commonly known as Dr. John, The Night Tripper and his band Lower 9-11 (pronounced "nine, eleven")

To become a genre unto oneself must be the supreme dream of any artist, and it was one realised by venerable New Orleans rhythm & blues institution Dr John decades ago. He is therefore familiar with the other edge of this particular Excalibur: that it makes it next to impossible to surprise your audience, at least short of doing something plain silly, like appearing on stage dressed as a panda, or collaborating with Sting. It is therefore both a compliment and an expression of sympathy to note that, at this point, it is barely necessary to listen to a Dr John song entitled Feel Good Music, as the opening track of this album is: you already know, down to the last exquisite swell of piano and languidly drawled vocal, exactly what it is going to sound like

Lifestyle - Joe Satriani

I can't find Lifestyle on video but I like the lyrics

You wake up in the morning and you're smokin' like a house on fire.
'Cause you've been out all night, and you're burnt down to the wire.
I really love you baby, but you put me through the fire.

Your killin me. [x2]
And if I don't do somethin' 'bout it there'll be nothing left for me.

I used to listen to a couple records by Rev. Gary Davis - well, back when we had records. He was a fantastic guitar player who straddled the line between blues and gospel music.
