Furry Lewis is a personal favourite. Tuffy P and I once spent an afternoon searching for his grave in the Hollywood Cemetery in Memphis.
I read somewhere that Furry used to pawn his guitar. If someone wanted him to play, they would have to give him money up front to get his guitar back. It was his way of making sure he got paid for his gig.
I love the way his playing is at the same time rough and tumble and really subtle. Great performer, often overlooked.
