Low Country Blues - Gregg Allman 2011

BBC Review An idiosyncratic history lesson from an old master
.... at 63, Gregg Allman holds his own; few have bettered his trademark throaty holler, and aided by his trusty Hammond B-3 the veteran sustains an appealing presence throughout the idiosyncratic variety (and yes, that is Dr John’s understated piano fills in the left-hand speaker).
Guardian
Gregg Allman is the archetypical survivor, a hero with the Allman Brothers Band in the 70s, and a man whose famously wild career has involved induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, six marriages and a liver transplant.

Son Seals

I was thinking about the late Son Seals today. He used to have a tremendously hot band that came up to play Toronto from time to time back in the 80s. Tuffy P and I almost saw him in Chicago a few years after that. I say almost because we paid our cover at some little place in Old Town and went in and the place was jammed. I mean you couldn't move in there. It was so crowded it was dangerous and we decided to bail.

Juke Boy Bonner

I came across a Juke Boy Bonner record on vinyl back in my teens and I could never understand why he wasn't a big name.

Free At Last

"Let freedom ring. And when this happens, and when we allow freedom ring—when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children—black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics—will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: 'Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!'"

Worried Life Blues

"Worried Life Blues" is a blues standard that has become "one of the most covered of all blues songs."Major "Big Maceo" Merriweather recorded "Worried Life Blues," a mid-tempo, 8-bar blues, in 1941.

Oh lordy lord, oh lordy lord
It hurts me so bad, for us to part
But someday baby, I ain't gonna worry my life anymore

U-Haul

Mr. Stark was from South Carolina. He died in 2005. I don't know much more about him except that his career was revived when he was in his 70s with help from the Music Maker Relief Foundation.
