Check out Johnny Lowebow..here.
He runs a shop in Memphis where he sells his Lowebow cigarbox guitars. Most of his have multiple strings as I recall, but it seems to me he sold some one-string jobs as well. Mr. Lowebow is a very nice fellow. He plays a kind of punky-blues one-man-band music. Interesting business.
Well now that I know where to get one, looks like there is no reason not to. Thanks mister anchovy. :)
