It had to have been the late 1980s when I ran across Jon Gindick's book. It's excellent if you're serious about playing harp and want to get past all the huffing and puffing, all the steamrolling of licks over the vocalist. That chapter on "Slant Harp," playing in minor keys, was particularly a revelation - to this day, I'll tell you that I don't know if a harp player is any good until I hear him attack a minor-keyed song.
I've since done a lot of study on theory, building from the foundation "Rock n' Blues Harmonica" laid down in such an understandable fashion.
Now, 20+ years later, after blazing a swath across the continent with a beltful of harps, with several hundred gigs, at least a dozen bands and some recording projects behind me, I'm itchin' to pick up that book again. Did I mention it's excellent?
(I also recommend "Harmonicas, Harps, and Heavy Breathers." I think Kim Fields wrote it.)
