Sometimes you just come across a really good find. A reference to Bob Dylan threw Spider John up - I'll have to listen to some more.

Huge influence on Dylan, in fact, and a lot of other people. Dave Snaker Ray, Tony Little Sun Glover, and Spider John Koerner came out of MN/SP in the late '50s/early '60s and really shook up the east coast academic folkies. John has done a whole series of solo discs (my favorite is "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Been") and they're uniformly great. Also excellent footage of him and his then-working band in the PBS documentary "Mississippi: River of Song." A personal hero of mine.
There's also a nice CD that features Spider John along with Ramblin Jack and Utah Phillips.
