Stevie Ray Vaughan Videos and Mp3s

A favorite of many blues fans is Stevie Ray Vaughan. I really like his music and when you have a blues guitarist such as B.B. King saying;

“I've said that playing the blues is like having to be black twice. Stevie [Ray Vaughan] missed on both counts, but I never noticed.”
Then you must be something special.

Wikipedia says;
Stephen "Stevie" Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990) was an American blues-rock guitarist, whose broad appeal made him an influential electric blues guitarist. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Stevie Ray Vaughan #7 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and Classic Rock Magazine ranked him #3 in their list of the 100 Wildest Guitar Heroes in 2007.
So it is not all just hype, but the young man could play.

Six Strings Down Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan

Someone asked a question about the song Six Strings Down. And it reminded me that I own the DVD A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan, and that song is on it. I had loaned it out to so many different people, because I wanted them to see what other musicians thought about Stevie Ray Vaughan, that I was worried that I had lost it.

So I had to go to my DVD collection to see if I could find it. I had not viewed it in a few years. I hate to admit that I own so much music that even putting a lot of it on heavy rotation I still do not get around to listening to a lot of it. So much good blues music, so little time I always say.

It is a very cool DVD and the song Six Strings Down is a very cool song. Check out the YouTube video below.

This 1996 concert tribute underscores that common denominator through muscular performances from contemporary blues masters who readily (and appropriately) confirm the Texas guitarist as a true peer--it's no small matter that bona fide influences Buddy Guy and B.B. King cite the honoree on an equal plane with Vaughan's most obvious rock forebear, Jimi Hendrix.

King and Guy are among the stars who interpret Vaughan's own songbook in live performances backed by either his old band, Double Trouble, or the larger Tilt-a-Whirl Band. Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Dr. John, and the late guitarslinger's big brother, Jimmie Vaughan (himself a major figure since his days with the Fabulous Thunderbirds) all pay gritty musical homage noteworthy for powerhouse guitar work.

Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan - Stormy Monday Video

I have been thinking about posting much more of the post World War II type blues music. And that is what got me thinking more about Stevie Ray Vaughan. There are some great modern bluesmen like SRV, Clapton, and John Mayall. I will try to find and post more of their music as we go along.

Having said that, and in keeping with my last post. Check this out;

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Stevie Wonder - The Two Stevies

I was wondering what I would post today, and then it occurred to me that I do not post enough Stevie Ray Vaughan. I really do need to fix that.

And then low and behold someone posted some Stevie Ray with Stevie Wonder on YouTube. Now I know this is not the classical blues that I normally post in this blog, but who is going to complain about the two Stevies.

Jimmie Vaughan — The Pleasure’s All Mine

James Lawrence "Jimmie" Vaughan is an American blues guitarist and singer from Dallas, Texas. He is the older brother of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan.

A couple of good ones -----

Significant influence upon Jimmie Vaughan's style came from Freddie King, who advised him personally; from Albert King and B. B. King; as well as from Johnny "Guitar" Watson. Vaughan says that he and his younger brother Stevie Ray Vaughan studied Johnny "Guitar" Watson more than any other single guitaris

Texas blues

Growing up in Louisiana, in the shadow of the great state of Texas gives you a different perspective on things. Especially music. Especially blues music. I feel like I really understand what those great Texas blues musicians were singing about, you know what I mean?

People like Lightin' Hopkins, Big Mama Thornton, T-Bone Walker and Leadbelly. Living there for a few years, and going to college there only served to make me appreciate the state, the people and the great Texas Blues music even more.

According to Wikipedia;

Texas Blues began to appear in the early 1900s among African Americans who worked in oilfields, ranches and lumber camps. In the 1920s, Blind Lemon Jefferson innovated the style by using jazz-like improvisation and single string accompaniment on a guitar; Jefferson's influence defined the field and inspired later performers, like Lightnin' Hopkins and T-Bone Walker. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, many bluesmen moved to cities like Galveston, Houston and Dallas. It was from these cities that a new wave of popular performers appeared, including slide guitarist and gospel singer Blind Willie Johnson and legendary vocalist Big Mama Thornton. Duke Records and Peacock Records were the most important labels of the scene.

In the 1960s, however, the record industry moved north, reducing Texas's importance in the blues scene. The area's importance returned in the 1970s when a Texas blues rock sound developed, led by Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, ZZ Top and the The Fabulous Thunderbirds. This set the stage for the revival of the 1980s, which produced Stevie Ray Vaughan and moved the blues capital of the state to Austin.

Friday Funny - SRV & Lonnie Mack - Oreo Cookie Blues

This performance by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Lonnie Mack cracks me up. My wife loves Oreo Cookies and can not live without them, that line about chocolate on your fingers and icing on your lips makes me laugh out loud. This is truly some great blues humor.

Electric blues

According to Wikipedia;

The electric blues is a type of blues music distinguished by the amplification of the guitar, the bass guitar , and/or the harmonica. Electric blues is performed in several regional subgenres, such as Chicago blues, Texas blues and Memphis blues.

The electric blues first emerged as a fully-fledged genre in the mid-1940s. The initial wave of U.S. electric blues musicians inspired the British blues scene of the 1960s, which included artists such as John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Cream, Eric Clapton, The Yardbirds and the first incarnation of Fleetwood Mac, as well as rock groups such as The Who, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones.

Though one of the most famous and arguably the best guitarist, was Stevie Ray Vaughn. He Brought the music of electric blues to a new level, inspiring and exposing it to a vast crowd which made this genre even more popular then it was previously.

John Mayer was first inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughn's playing though he took a more pop-sounding route. But later, he came back to his more bluesy roots with John Mayer Trio.

Electric blues artists include:

Bo Diddley
Joe Bonamassa
Eric Clapton

The Things I Used To Do

"The Things That I Used to Do" is a song written by Guitar Slim (aka Eddie Jones) and his 1953 recording of it in New Orleans, was arranged and produced by a young Ray Charles. It was released on Specialty Records in 1954 to become a bestseller, staying in the rhythm and blues charts for 42 weeks'. I can't find that version but Buddy Guy discusses him here

Wikipedia

Ray Charles's arrangement and piano accompaniment emphasizes the religious tone of intense but philosophical regret in the singer's voice, giving the song a gospel-influenced feel.
I would be interested of course in friends comments - which version is the 'best' and why?

The song has been covered by many artists, including

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Albert Collins

Junior Parker, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Big Joe Turner, The Grateful Dead and Buddy Guy

A Rare version by Jimi Hendrix

Chuck Berry

A very, very good version by Earl King

Pride - Seven Deadly Sins

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Pride & Joy
I never need an excuse to listen to more Stevie.

Well you've heard about love givin' sight to the blind
My baby's lovin' cause the sun to shine

She's my sweet little thang....

She's my pride and joy

She's my sweet little baby....

I'm her little lover boy

BB King Ten Long Years - or to BB for that matter.

Oh, for ten long years, yes, she was my pride and joy
Oh, for ten long years, she was my pride and joy

Well, I used to call her my little girl and she used to call me her little boy

Sade - Love is stronger than Pride
Not the most obvious Blues connection but she 'transports' me.

I still really really love you
Love is stronger than pride

I still really really love you
