This clip is from the DVD "Otis Rush - Live at Montreux 1986". It was released in 2006. I was listening to it this morning, and it struck me what a wonderful performance of "Everyday I Have the Blues" by Luther Allison this is. I really like the ad libed lyrics and how he plays his guitar.

Southpaw guitarist Otis Rush made his debut in 1956 with a cover of Willie Dixon’s "I Can’t Quit You Baby", charting his first Top Ten R&B hit. Over the course of his 50-year career, Rush has established himself as one of the premiere bluesmen on the Chicago circuit.

Often credited with being one of the architects of the West side guitar style, Rush’s esteemed status as a prime Chicago innovator is eternally assured by his trademark sound. Blues fans have said that his combination of ringing, vibrato-enhanced guitar work with an intense vocal delivery is powerful enough to force the hair on the backs of their necks upwards in silent salute.

Otis Rush Live At Montreux 1986 features the Chicago blues legend at his spine-tingling best. For his first appearance at the Montreux Festival, Rush is joined on stage by fellow blues stars Eric Clapton and Luther Allison for a truly special show. The DVD features nearly an hour-and-a-half of performances of Rush classics, including "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", "Double Trouble" and many more.

While doing some research on a Rolling Stone's song I came across the mp3 album Songs Of The Rolling Stones: All Blues'd Up!.

I'm not sure how this album slipped under my radar, but I missed it back when it was released in July 9th, 2002.

And I would like to present it to you today, because I love how it highlights the blues music of the Rolling Stones and because their songs are performed by some great blues musicians.

It's the Birthday of Luther Allison

Luther Allison was born on this day in 1939 and he passed away on August 12 in 1997. He was an blues guitarist who was born in Widener, Arkansas and moved with his family, at age twelve, to Chicago, Illinois in 1951. He taught himself guitar while still a kid down in Arkansas where he first heard the blues. Many years later he began hanging outside blues clubs with the hopes of being invited to perform. He played with Howlin' Wolf's band and backed up James Cotton among others. He was also called to the stage to play with Muddy Waters.

I love the harmonica part on that last video, according to a comment left on YouTube for this video, Garfield Angrove is playing the harp on this track.

And it really saddens me to have to write that Luther Allison died of inoperable lung cancer just a few days before his birthday back in 1997. As so often happens the good die young, and Mr. Allison was definitely one of the good ones. His death, "robbed music fans of one of the most exciting and popular blues performers ever."
