Man that music turns my crank. What is it about Memphis, anyway? Sam Phillips recorded all those gritty` blues sides on Sun. Ike Turner may have recorded the first Rock n Roll tune in that studio. Then rockabilly, Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash. Then Stax, the Memphis beat and all that fantastic soul music, Isaac Hayes Hot Buttered Soul and Furry Lewis there all through it all, and the Boxtops, Alex Chilton, Big Star. It goes on and on. Even though it may be a cheezy tourist thing, when I was at Sun Studios and I stood on the spot where Johnny Cash stood when he sang I Walk the Line, it gave me shivers.
We all have to do the touristy thing - it makes us human. I think of cycling up Alpe d'Huez and imagining Miguel Indurain, Lance Armstrong etc.
Love the Stax stuff though - all those names!
I recently heard an interview with Booker T. on PBS he is an amazing guy, started playing when he was in high school. Check out his bio http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booker_T._Jones
