There's something about one-man bands that really turns my crank....

Dr. Ross recorded on Sun in the 1950s. He lived from October 21, 1925 – May 28, 1993. He was known for his guitar and harmonica boogies.

Michael De Jong

LastFM

” Michael’s musical landscape is vast and haunted, filled with living breathing demons and a darkness so dark that there is only one way out…and that is to sing as if your life counted on it. Michael sings as if his life is counting on it. Rarely will you find a man who will give you so much in his music…Michael de Jong gives you all he’s got. Consider it a gift, because it is. He is a musical treasure.” Mary Gauthier - Artist / Performer

B.B. King - "Nobody Loves Me But My Mother"

You can keep all those fast playing, soulless guitar players. You know who I'm talking about. But if they played for a thousand years, they will never be able to have the soul that B.B. King has in his pinky finger.

Love that tone, those big old fat blues notes. If you want to learn to play blues guitar, I recommended that you listen to everything Mr. King ever did.

Elmore James "Every Day I Have The Blues"

I don't know about y'all but every single day of my life I have the blues. But that might have something to do with the fact that everyday I search for some good blues music to post in my blues blog. LOL.

Notes from YouTube;

Often creditet to blues/boogie woogie pianist Memphis Slim (Peter Chatman), "Every Day I Have The Blues" goes back to the '30s, when it was recorded by the Sparks Brothers. It has become one of the most popular urban blues tunes. Lowell Fulson had a hit version in the early '50s, and the tune has long been B.B. King's opener and theme song. It has been recorded also by Albert King, Buddy Guy, Chuck Berry and many others. Elmore waxed it February 21, 1963 for Bobby Robinson's Enjoy Records in New York City on what was to be his last recording session.

Luther Allison, Otis Rush, Eric Clapton - "Everyday I Have the Blues"

This clip is from the DVD "Otis Rush - Live at Montreux 1986". It was released in 2006. I was listening to it this morning, and it struck me what a wonderful performance of "Everyday I Have the Blues" by Luther Allison this is. I really like the ad libed lyrics and how he plays his guitar.

Otis Rush - Live at Montreux 1986

DVD Description;

Southpaw guitarist Otis Rush made his debut in 1956 with a cover of Willie Dixon’s "I Can’t Quit You Baby", charting his first Top Ten R&B hit. Over the course of his 50-year career, Rush has established himself as one of the premiere bluesmen on the Chicago circuit.

Often credited with being one of the architects of the West side guitar style, Rush’s esteemed status as a prime Chicago innovator is eternally assured by his trademark sound. Blues fans have said that his combination of ringing, vibrato-enhanced guitar work with an intense vocal delivery is powerful enough to force the hair on the backs of their necks upwards in silent salute.

Otis Rush Live At Montreux 1986 features the Chicago blues legend at his spine-tingling best. For his first appearance at the Montreux Festival, Rush is joined on stage by fellow blues stars Eric Clapton and Luther Allison for a truly special show. The DVD features nearly an hour-and-a-half of performances of Rush classics, including "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", "Double Trouble" and many more.

May 4, 2009 was a day 20 years in the making, says Bonamassa. I have never been so honored in my life. It was truly larger than the sum of its parts.

At the Hall, Bonamassa had the added honor of being joined onstage by the legendary Eric Clapton. The Guitar Buzz calls it, A must-have DVD for any Joe Bonamassa fan and frankly, any person who plays the guitar and appreciates instrumental mastery at work. Holland writes in Guitar International, It s not only a momentous occasion for Joe Bonamassa, it s one for bluesrock in general.

This double DVD set, which features a twelve-camera high definition, surround sound shoot produced by Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes, Aerosmith) and an exclusive interview and behind-the-scenes footage with Bonamassa, presents that magical night in full for posterity, and for all the fans that couldn t be among the roughly 5,000 concertgoers filling the seats.

Blues Books - When Giants Walked the Earth: A Biography of Led Zeppelin

When Giants Walked the Earth:
A Biography of Led Zeppelin

click image for info

From Publishers Weekly
In this ambitious biography, Wall narrates the history of a band that became one of the biggest musical and cultural phenomena of the 1970s. The brainchild of studio wizard Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin marked the transition from flower-power good vibrations to the rough sounds of a disillusioned era. More than just another hard-rock band, however, Zeppelin drew on elements from reggae, soul, blues and R&B, as well as more exotic sounds from India and the Middle East.

The trashed hotel rooms and violated groupies Zeppelin left in its wake helped to create an enduring rock and roll road archetype. Wall painstakingly traces Zeppelin's development and musical pedigree. His access and attention to detail make this a definitive work. However, he falls short in substance and style when he tries to move beyond the music. Flashback segments written from the perspective of the various principals are confusing, and his forays into nonmusical subjects—such as Page's interest in the occult—are often portentous. Nevertheless, this volume is an essential source for anyone eager to learn about the era when rock stars ruled the world.

Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band: Safe as Milk

Safe as Milk is the debut album by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, originally released in 1967. It is a heavily blues-influenced work, but also hints at many of the features—such as surreal lyrics and odd time signatures—that would later become trademarks of Beefheart's music.

The album is also notable for the involvement of a 20-year-old Ry Cooder, who plays guitar and wrote some of the arrangements.

Amazon.co.uk

"I may be hungry, but I sure ain't weird," Don Van Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart, famously intones on this bright-sounding re-mastered version of the 1967 debut by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. Safe as Milk is a bold, tough-ass distillation of Delta blues stomp and 1960s garage-punk swagger, fused with a radically polyrhythmic and tempo-shifting style that one might term "art rock".

His guitar tone itself is jaw-dropping. His bassist and drummer are as tight as wallpaper on a wall. And the overall sound quality is TOP NOTCH. Best concert DVD of the year. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Howlin' Wolf on Shindig

There are many important moments in the history of music, I am sure. And here is a clip of what I consider to be a very important moment.

It is the apperance of Howlin' Wolf on the show Shindig. The story goes, that Mr. Wolf was allowed to perform at the bequest of the Rock band The Rolling Stones.

Wikipedia says of the incident;

1965 he appeared on the television show Shindig at the insistence of The Rolling Stones, who were scheduled to appear on the same program and who had covered "Little Red Rooster" on an early album.

Note the subtle sexuality of this clip. It is one of those times where I am transported back to when I was a boy and I am seeing something that I have seen many times, and finally understanding it. Note how Wolf dances, note how the camera zooms on the bottoms of the girls sitting on the bar stools.

I apologize for the poor quailty of this clip, but even with it's flaws it is excellent. Becuase it captures a very important moment in blues history.

Louis Armstrong "St. James Infirmary"

I can not go very long without hearing this song. And so here it is, "so cold, so sweet, so fair" for your enjoyment.

Notes from YouTube:

Armstrong's version of a classic popular piece. Enjoy.

I went down to St. James Infirmary,
Saw my baby there,
Set down on a long white table,
So sweet, so cold, so fair.
Let her go, let her go, God bless her,
Wherever she may be,
She can look this wide world over,
She'll never find a sweet man like me.
When I die, want you to dress me in straight-leg shoes,
Box back coat and a stetson hat,
Put a 20 dollar gold piece on my watch chain,
So the boys'll know that I died standing pat.

and from a comment;

there are two main Armstrong's version out there.

The first, very fast, dates back to 1928: "Louis Armstrong And His Savoy Ballroom Five", December 12, 1928 (watch?v=VMZPdAlgWvY)

The second, sadder and much more slower version, was first recorded in 1959: "Satchmo Plays King Oliver".

The one I put here is taken from : "Most Famous Hits", CD 1, 2000. It is almost identical to the 2nd studio version.

Many cool and interesting points made here.

* MP3 Players use either hard drives or flash memory.

* Hard drives give you more storage, but flash memory can be jostled when running or during other activities.

* Check the player out in a store prior to buying.

* MP3's can organize your collection, via info that is embedded in the MP3 file.

* There are various online music stores, you need to make sure that the player you choose works with the online player you choose.

* Get an MP3 player that has a radio, it is a nice feature because you can get a lot of info from listening to radio stations (other then just music).

* Shop around, MP3 players are sold by many outlets.

Carlos Johnson — The Healer

A good interview with the Illinois Blues

IB - I found one of your earlier albums called The Healer with Chicago Bluesman Lefty Dizz. He played left handed too. Many people are not aware of Lefty's great guitar work. Can you tell us about your work and time with Lefty?

Carlos - Lefty Dizz was a great guitar player. A lot of people didn't know this because his theatrics on stage were quite frightening. Like if he had a 335 in his hand and was tossing it up in the air and spinning it around that was a little intense but he never dropped it.

We were very close. We used to call each other Father and Son and argue about who was the Father and who was the Son. But I was younger so I always won that argument.
